Juan Magana founded Bodegas Vina Magana in 1970, and owns 247 acres of old vine French varietals in Navarra, just northeast of Rioja. After researching the best wines in the world, Juan decided to grow Bordeaux grapes in Navarra, with its specific Pomerol-like terroir. He bought Merlot cuttings from a nursery that sold to famous chateaux in St. Emilion and Pomerol, most notably the hallowed Chateau Petrus. Magana’s most significant find was Petrus Clone 181 Class A Merlot. The vines are planted on topsoil of gravel, clay and limestone, over gravel subsoil. A pioneer in Navarra, over the years Magana has become a reference point for quality in the region.
Technical notes
(50% Tempranillo/25% Merlot/25% Cabernet Sauvignon). Planted on limestone soil, the estate-grown fruit includes Petrus clones of Merlot. Each variety is vinified separately in 228 liter French oak barrels before blending. For fermentation, 15% whole clusters are retained with a percentage of stems to aerate the cap. The wine is aged for 12 months in neutral French oak barrels.
